What Is a Sensory-Friendly Playground? A Parent's Guide

A sensory-friendly playground is designed to welcome kids with sensory sensitivities — here's what that means and what to look for.

A sensory-friendly playground is a play space intentionally designed so that children with sensory sensitivities — including kids with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing differences — can play comfortably, regulate, and have fun. The difference isn't the equipment so much as the thoughtfulness behind it.

What makes a playground sensory-friendly?

  • Managed noise and lighting — softer sound, gentler light, and fewer jarring surprises.
  • A calm-down space — somewhere quiet to retreat and re-regulate, like our Twilight Time room.
  • Controlled capacity — fewer crowds, so the space never becomes overwhelming.
  • Trained, affirming staff — people who understand sensory needs and never make families feel judged.
  • Whole-body sensory input — swings, climbing, and tactile play that help kids organize their senses.

Who benefits?

Sensory-sensitive kids benefit most obviously — but so does every child. A calmer, well-designed environment is simply a better place to play. And critically, sensory-friendly spaces give parents a chance to relax, too, instead of bracing for meltdown.

How Prana Play does it

Prana Play was built from the ground up as a sensory haven in Carmel: calm-by-design zones, a dedicated Twilight Time retreat, line-of-sight for parents, and group occupational therapy on site. See open play or explore the haven.
